Australian Open 2016 Serena Williams vs Angelique Kerber Finals Jan 30

Australian Open 2016 Serena Williams vs Angelique Kerber finals women’s single January 30. Preview, result, recap and highlights right here @Spikedaily.com. The German pulled off an incredible 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over the world No1 to secure her first grand slam title and deny Williams a record-equalling 22nd.

Serena Williams is one win away from her 22nd career Grand Slam title, although Angelique Kerber is not going to go down without a fight in the 2016 Australian Open final.

Even at 34 years old, Williams is playing as well as ever with four major championships in the last five tries. The next one will tie her with Steffi Graf for the most wins in the Open Era, solidifying her standing in the history of the sport.

On the other side of the court will be Kerber, who has played well her entire career but had never reached a Grand Slam final until now. Despite the inexperience at this level, she has obvious talent and could make this an intriguing battle worth watching.

And some final thoughts from me. An extraordinary performance from Kerber, a popular first-time grand slam champion, who got off to such a strong start and refused to be intimidated by the world No1 even when the match moved to its climax.

Yes, Williams’s play was patchy, her serve was off and her tactic to come to the net didn’t work, but Kerber took full advantage and remained consistent throughout, showing tremendous defence and pulling off some stunning passing shots.

Perhaps Kerber’s win can serve as inspiration for Andy Murray tomorrow against Novak Djokovic. Do join us then for live coverage; in the meantime I’ll leave you with Kevin Mitchell’s match report from Melbourne. We’ll also have a report on Jamie Murray’s men’s doubles final, which is just getting under way. Thanks for reading. Bye!

Game Preview

Kerber might not be as accomplished as her opponent in this matchup, but she has certainly performed well recently. After a tough battle in the first round, the German has gone on an impressive run with five straight-set victories in a row, including a relatively dominant performance over Victoria Azarenka.
